    The state of West Virginia was established as part of the United States on June 20, 1863, making it the 35th to join the union. West Virginia ranks 41st in size8 with 24,087 sq. miles of land, and Charleston is the largest city. West Virginia also ranks 37th in population8 with 1,808,344 residents (2000 est.), and Charleston is the state capital. The official bird of West Virginia is the Cardinal, and the official flower is the Big Rhododendron.
