    The state of Virginia was established as part of the United States on June 25, 1788, making it the 10th to join the union. Virginia ranks 37th in size8 with 39,598 sq. miles of land, and Virginia Beach is the largest city. Virginia also ranks 12nd in population8 with 7,078,515 residents (2000 est.), and Richmond is the state capital. The official bird of Virginia is the Cardinal, and the official flower is the Dogwood.
