    The state of Tennessee was established as part of the United States on June 1, 1796, making it the 16th to join the union. Tennessee ranks 34th in size8 with 41,220 sq. miles of land, and Memphis is the largest city. Tennessee also ranks 16th in population8 with 5,689,283 residents (2000 est.), and Nashville is the state capital. The official bird of Tennessee is the Mockingbird, and the official flower is the Iris.
