The state of Pennsylvania was established as part of the United States on December 12, 1787, making it the 2nd to join the union.
Pennsylvania ranks 32nd in size8 with 44,820 sq. miles of land, and Philadelphia is the largest city.
Pennsylvania also ranks 6th in population8 with 12,281,054 residents (2000 est.), and Harrisburg is the state capital.
The official bird of Pennsylvania is the Ruffed Grouse, and the official flower is the Mountain Laurel.
