    The state of Ohio was established as part of the United States on March 1, 1803, making it the 17th to join the union. Ohio ranks 35th in size8 with 40,953 sq. miles of land, and Columbus is the largest city. Ohio also ranks 7th in population8 with 11,353,140 residents (2000 est.), and Columbus is the state capital. The official bird of Ohio is the Cardinal, and the official flower is the Scarlet Carnation.
