    The state of New Mexico was established as part of the United States on January 6, 1912, making it the 47th to join the union. New Mexico ranks 5th in size8 with 121,365 sq. miles of land, and Albuquerque is the largest city. New Mexico also ranks 36th in population8 with 1,819,046 residents (2000 est.), and Santa Fe is the state capital. The official bird of New Mexico is the Roadrunner, and the official flower is the Yucca Flower.
