    THE GARDEN STATE

    The state of New Jersey was established as part of the United States on December 18, 1787, making it the 3rd to join the union. New Jersey ranks 46th in size8 with 7,418 sq. miles of land, and Newark is the largest city. New Jersey also ranks 9th in population8 with 8,414,350 residents (2000 est.), and Trenton is the state capital. The official bird of New Jersey is the Eastern Goldfinch, and the official flower is the Purple Violet.
