    The state of New Hampshire was established as part of the United States on June 21, 1788, making it the 9th to join the union. New Hampshire ranks 44th in size8 with 8,969 sq. miles of land, and Manchester is the largest city. New Hampshire also ranks 41st in population8 with 1,235,786 residents (2000 est.), and Concord is the state capital. The official bird of New Hampshire is the Purple Finch, and the official flower is the Purple Lilac.
