    The state of Nebraska was established as part of the United States on March 1, 1867, making it the 37th to join the union. Nebraska ranks 15th in size8 with 75,898 sq. miles of land, and Omaha is the largest city. Nebraska also ranks 38th in population8 with 1,711,263 residents (2000 est.), and Lincoln is the state capital. The official bird of Nebraska is the Western Meadowlark, and the official flower is the Goldenrod.
