    The state of North Dakota was established as part of the United States on November 2, 1889, making it the 39th to join the union. North Dakota ranks 17th in size8 with 68,994 sq. miles of land, and Fargo is the largest city. North Dakota also ranks 47th in population8 with 642,200 residents (2000 est.), and Bismarck is the state capital. The official bird of North Dakota is the Western Meadowlark, and the official flower is the Wild Prairie Rose.
