    The state of North Carolina was established as part of the United States on November 21, 1789, making it the 12nd to join the union. North Carolina ranks 29th in size8 with 48,718 sq. miles of land, and Charlotte is the largest city. North Carolina also ranks 11th in population8 with 8,049,313 residents (2000 est.), and Raleigh is the state capital. The official bird of North Carolina is the Cardinal, and the official flower is the Dogwood.
