    The state of Montana was established as part of the United States on November 8, 1889, making it the 41st to join the union. Montana ranks 4th in size8 with 145.556 sq. miles of land, and Billings is the largest city. Montana also ranks 44th in population8 with 902,195 residents (2000 est.), and Helena is the state capital. The official bird of Montana is the Western Meadowlark, and the official flower is the Bitterroot.
