    The state of Missouri was established as part of the United States on August 10, 1821, making it the 24th to join the union. Missouri ranks 18th in size8 with 68,898 sq. miles of land, and Kansas City is the largest city. Missouri also ranks 17th in population8 with 5,595,211 residents (2000 est.), and Jefferson City is the state capital. The official bird of Missouri is the Bluebird, and the official flower is the Hawthorn.
