    THE GOPHER STATE

    The state of Minnesota was established as part of the United States on May 11, 1858, making it the 32nd to join the union. Minnesota ranks 14th in size8 with 79,617 sq. miles of land, and Minneapolis is the largest city. Minnesota also ranks 21st in population8 with 4,919,479 residents (2000 est.), and St. Paul is the state capital. The official bird of Minnesota is the Common Loon, and the official flower is the Pink and White Lady's Slipper.
