    The state of Michigan was established as part of the United States on January 26, 1837, making it the 26th to join the union. Michigan ranks 22nd in size8 with 56,809 sq. miles of land, and Detroit is the largest city. Michigan also ranks 8th in population8 with 9,938,444 residents (2000 est.), and Lansing is the state capital. The official bird of Michigan is the Robin, and the official flower is the Apple Blossom.
