    The state of Maine was established as part of the United States on March 15, 1820, making it the 23rd to join the union. Maine ranks 39th in size8 with 30,865 sq. miles of land, and Portland is the largest city. Maine also ranks 40th in population8 with 1,274,923 residents (2000 est.), and Augusta is the state capital. The official bird of Maine is the Chickadee, and the official flower is the White Pine Cone and Tassel.
