    The state of Massachusetts was established as part of the United States on February 6, 1788, making it the 6th to join the union. Massachusetts ranks 45th in size8 with 7,838 sq. miles of land, and Boston is the largest city. Massachusetts also ranks 13rd in population8 with 6,349,097 residents (2000 est.), and Boston is the state capital. The official bird of Massachusetts is the Chickadee, and the official flower is the Mayflower.
