    The state of Kentucky was established as part of the United States on June 1, 1792, making it the 15th to join the union. Kentucky ranks 36th in size8 with 39,732 sq. miles of land, and Louisville is the largest city. Kentucky also ranks 25th in population8 with 4,041,769 residents (2000 est.), and Frankfort is the state capital. The official bird of Kentucky is the Kentucky Cardinal, and the official flower is the Goldenrod.
