    The state of Kansas was established as part of the United States on January 29, 1861, making it the 34th to join the union. Kansas ranks 13rd in size8 with 81,823 sq. miles of land, and Wichita is the largest city. Kansas also ranks 32nd in population8 with 2,688,418 residents (2000 est.), and Topeka is the state capital. The official bird of Kansas is the Western Meadowlark, and the official flower is the Native Sunflower.
