    The state of Indiana was established as part of the United States on December 11, 1816, making it the 19th to join the union. Indiana ranks 38th in size8 with 35,870 sq. miles of land, and Indianapolis is the largest city. Indiana also ranks 14th in population8 with 6,080,485 residents (2000 est.), and Indianapolis is the state capital. The official bird of Indiana is the Cardinal, and the official flower is the Peony.
