    State sovereignty, national union

    The state of Illinois was established as part of the United States on December 3, 1818, making it the 21st to join the union. Illinois ranks 24th in size8 with 55,593 sq. miles of land, and Chicago is the largest city. Illinois also ranks 5th in population8 with 12,419,293 residents (2000 est.), and Springfield is the state capital. The official bird of Illinois is the Cardinal, and the official flower is the Native violet.
