    The state of Iowa was established as part of the United States on December 28, 1846, making it the 29th to join the union. Iowa ranks 23rd in size8 with 55,875 sq. miles of land, and Des Moines is the largest city. Iowa also ranks 30th in population8 with 2,926,324 residents (2000 est.), and Des Moines is the state capital. The official bird of Iowa is the Eastern Goldfinch, and the official flower is the Wild Rose.
