    The state of Hawaii was established as part of the United States on August 21, 1959, making it the 50th to join the union. Hawaii ranks 47th in size8 with 6,423 sq. miles of land, and Honolulu is the largest city. Hawaii also ranks 42nd in population8 with 1,211,537 residents (2000 est.), and Honolulu is the state capital. The official bird of Hawaii is the Nene (Hawaiian Goose), and the official flower is the Hibiscus.
