    The state of Georgia was established as part of the United States on January 2, 1788, making it the 4th to join the union. Georgia ranks 21st in size8 with 57,918 sq. miles of land, and Atlanta is the largest city. Georgia also ranks 10th in population8 with 8,186,453 residents (2000 est.), and Atlanta is the state capital. The official bird of Georgia is the Brown Thrasher, and the official flower is the Cherokee Rose.
