    The state of Florida was established as part of the United States on March 3, 1845, making it the 27th to join the union. Florida ranks 26th in size8 with 53,997 sq. miles of land, and Jacksonville is the largest city. Florida also ranks 4th in population8 with 15,982,378 residents (2000 est.), and Tallahassee is the state capital. The official bird of Florida is the Mockingbird, and the official flower is the Orange Blossom.
