    The state of Connecticut was established as part of the United States on January 9, 1788, making it the 5th to join the union. Connecticut ranks 48th in size8 with 4,845 sq. miles of land, and Bridgeport is the largest city. Connecticut also ranks 29th in population8 with 3,405,565 residents (2000 est.), and Hartford is the state capital. The official bird of Connecticut is the American Robin, and the official flower is the Mountain Laurel.
