    The state of Arizona was established as part of the United States on February 14, 1912, making it the 48th to join the union. Arizona ranks 6th in size8 with 113,642 sq. miles of land, and Phoenix is the largest city. Arizona also ranks 20th in population8 with 5,130,632 residents (2000 est.), and Phoenix is the state capital. The official bird of Arizona is the Cactus Wren, and the official flower is the Saguaro Cactus Blossom.
